In the past, I have recommend the use of original printer cartridges (known as OEM) from the printer manufacturer, especially whilst the printer is under warranty. However, I now recommend using compatible cartridges as they are now as reliable and usually exceed the quality of OEM cartridges. In addition, using compatible cartridges won't void your printers warranty.

There are significant savings to be made by purchasing compatible rather than OEM cartridges. Printer manufacturers make most of their money from selling the cartridges, not from selling the printer.
